About Bolthole
Why the name, Bolthole? A question that comes up often: a bolthole is defined as '“a place where a person can escape and hide”. This embodies the direction of our work. We want your design to feel like a place that you can call your own and relax in without interruption from the busy city life. Our designs are ideal for residential dwellings and we aim to create practical and purposeful homes.
We don’t just do your designs either. We can manage your project through the whole design process. With a general idea of what you’d like, we can prepare and submit the necessary planning documentation to your council. Having dealt with many councils in Melbourne, we have a good understanding of the different planning requirements, building regulations and standards for different areas.
After this stage, we will create your designs, ensuring that the concepts of passive design, sustainability and site context aren’t forgotten.
About the Director
Joel established Bolthole Design & Drafting in 2013. Prior to this, he worked as a games designer, where technical details and beautiful images were the top priority. As such, he is a perfectionist when it comes to design and drawing.
Joel believes that less can definitely be more when it comes to design, and how important this is in a city. Joel will go above and beyond for you - give you what you’ve asked for (that meets regulations of course!) but also think about your project from all angles. He can provide thoughtful suggestions such as how to let in light and warmth, create multi-purpose rooms, and have good sales appeal.
In his spare time, Joel enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, gardening, playing handyman around the house, taking the dog for a run, and if he has any more spare time after that, playing with Lego!
